These are the basic flight formations which will need to be mastered before a wing commander decides to practice more advanced formations.

Column;



Column formation is used when approaching an objective or enemy battlegroup as this formation is a great way to reduce the profile of Imperial forces.
Ships at the head of the column help screen the ships behind it making a larger force seem less significant.
It is advised to change formation once within close proximity to the target as offensively this formation is very weak, having all ships in a column means that it is easier for the enemy to target them.

Line Abreast;



Line abreast is a standard offensive formation, it allows all guns to bare over a wide area.
Due to the ships being spread out it also makes a good formation for searching space for an objective.
Spreading out ships in a line abreast formation may also make a smaller force seem larger than it is.

Arrowhead/Delta;



The Arrowhead/Delta formation is an offensive manuever which allowes for some weapon spread but in a more focused area than line abreast.
Ships in an Arrowhead/Delta formation will have a smaller field of view than those in line abreast.
