Actually a good chunk of americans (especially those from new england, and specifically from new york which was originally called new amsterdam) are of dutch decent, and infact the term Yankee is apparently to do with the dutch settlers, there are three threories for that ....

1. When the British took over New Amsterdam, renaming it New York, there was a bit of animosity between the Dutch and the British settlers. Hence, in English we have words like dutch uncle, dutch courage and dutch treat all starting as put-downs of the Dutch. Cheese was a staple of the Dutch diet, and the British used to put the Dutch down saying, "Look it's John Cheese". The Dutch used to throw this insult back at the British - John = Jahn, Cheese = Kees. Hence "Jahnkees" or Yankees was born.

2. During the time of heavy Dutch settlement in the New York area a common surname was Janke (pronounced Yan-kee). Those damn Yankees is a reference to the constant influx of the Dutch at the time with that surname.

3. The name "Yankees" comes from the old Dutch term, jan kees, which was a sort of derogatory nickname.

So really although people think that the term Yank or Yankee is a derogitory term used by brittish towards americans and later by the south when talking about the north, it infact was a derogatory term for dutch imigrants

America has worked hard to get where it is. Look at where it started-13 colonies who rose up against the greatest Empire in the world and won. Did they win because they "deserved" to? Most certainly not. Did we become as powerful as we are today because we "deserved" to? No. America is in a tough spot economically right now, but we have recovered before. We will recover again.
